We hope you will consider joining this great team. Here is what is involved.
Generally, a gage steward would be responsible for maintenance and care of one or more specific gage location. The gage stewards would become members of the Floodzilla team, attend monthly meetings, keep up with flood events, and troubleshoot their specific gages, especially before a forecasted flood event.
Duties include:
- Preseason: prepare and reinstall gages, including clean sensor and transmitter, inspect antenna, and change batteries. Once reinstalled, inspect site for any debris that could return bad readings, and assist staff with re-surveying for data comparison integrity.
- During flood season: monitor readings and troubleshoot gages as necessary. Refer to SOP manual for remote and site-based diagnostic tools. Typical site-based troubleshooting actions include checking for debris, inspecting antenna, submersion, replacing batteries, resetting device.
- Preparing for individual flood events1: typically floods are forecasted 10 days out. At that time, a Gage Steward should check the readings, diagnose any problems, and delete any bad readings.
- During flood events/troubleshooting sensor & transmitter (as appropriate, limited based on safety): Share Floodzilla with community (reminder!), monitor readings every few hours (during waking hours), mark gages off-line if bad readings that cannot be fixed during flood event (accessibility). Also, where possible, take photos and make observations at key locations to build database.
